Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Stipules present, linear; but some species also have much larger leaf-like false stipules. Leaves alternate. Tendrils axillary or 0. Inflorescence an axillary 1-3-flowered cyme often prolonged into a single tendril or mucro. Flowers bisexual, small, greenish or whitish. Sepals 5(-6), free. Outer corona a barrel-shaped tube crowned by a ring of free threads; inner corona a cup-shaped membrane shorter than the outer corona. Capsule ellipsoid, 3(-4)-valved.

Worldwide: c.25 species in tropical and southern Africa.
