Description:
Perennial herb with prostrate stems. Leaves pinnately lobed. Flowers purple with yellow inside throat. Fruit with 4 rows of curved arms bearing recurved spines; total diameter of fruit up to 15 cm.

Derivation of specific name: procumbens: with stems lying along the ground; procumbent; transvaalensis: from the Transvaal in South Africa
