Description:
Small erect perennial herb, 5-20 cm tall. Stem branched, 4-angular, winged. Leaves opposite along the stems, sessile, elliptic-lanceolate,10-25 mm long; margin entire or with widely spaced minute teeth. Flowers solitary, axillary, appearing spike-like by the absence of upper leaves. Calyx 2-lipped and distinctly 5-winged. Corolla c. 4 m in diameter, blue with a darker purple and white mark at the base of the 3-lobed lower lip.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: spicatus: spike-like, referring to the appearance of the flowers on the upper branchlets
Habitat: In sandy or gravelly soils in grassland or open woodland.
