Description of the family

Usually monoecious annual or perennial, submerged herbs in fresh or brackish water, never marine. Roots fibrous, unbranched, arising singly or in groups from rhizomes or lower nodes. Stems glabrous, thread-like. Leaves alternate, opposite or whorled (most Zannichellia); entire or slightly toothed. Foliage leaves with a basal membranous sheath. Inflorescence dense spikes usually with 2-several small, inconspicuous, axillary flowers. Flowers actinomorphic, sometimes with a spathe-like bract (Zannichellia). Ovary superior, carpels free or partly fused. Fruit a drupe or berry; outer layers of the pericarp soft and becoming eroded, inner layers persisting. Seed solitary.

Worldwide: Two species, one endemic to Western Cape of South Africa.

Botswana: 1 genus and 1 taxon.
