Usually monoecious annual or perennial, submerged herbs in fresh or brackish water, never marine. Roots fibrous, unbranched, arising singly or in groups from rhizomes or lower nodes. Stems glabrous, thread-like. Leaves alternate, opposite or whorled (most Zannichellia); entire or slightly toothed. Foliage leaves with a basal membranous sheath. Inflorescence dense spikes usually with 2-several small, inconspicuous, axillary flowers. Flowers actinomorphic, sometimes with a spathe-like bract (Zannichellia). Ovary superior, carpels free or partly fused. Fruit a drupe or berry; outer layers of the pericarp soft and becoming eroded, inner layers persisting. Seed solitary. Worldwide: Two species, one endemic to Western Cape of South Africa. Botswana: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
