Description of the genus

Twining herbs (in ours) or twining shrubs. White latex present. Leaves opposite, ovate to almost round, distinctly cordate. Inflorescences extra-axillary, initially umbelliform but lengthening into a raceme. Corolla with a tube and spreading lobes, bearded along the margin. Corona with lobes erect, arching over the column at the apex. Follicles usually paired, reflexed on the pedicel or rarely spreading, fusiform to narrowly ovoid, curved at the apex into a beak, smooth to strongly echinate, hairless or pubescent.

Derivation of name: Pergula: trellis work, referring to climbing habit

Worldwide: 2 species in Africa, Arabia to India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Botswana: 1 taxon.
