Description of the genus

Annual. Inflorescence composed of numerous crowded racemes, hence forming a dense spike. Spikelets several-flowered, laterally flattened, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets. Glumes persistent, unequal, 1-nerved, shorter than the spikelet. Lemmas 3-nerved, conspicuously ciliate on lateral nerves, 2-toothed or entire with a long awn.

Worldwide: 1 species in eastern and southern Africa and Arabia

Botswana: 1 taxon.
