Description of the genus

Shrub. Leaves alternate, simple, usually petiolate. Flowers in terminal and subterminal corymbose inflorescences; calyx-tube expanded, usually 4-lobed; petals usually 4, imbricate; disk fleshy, lining the calyx-tube. Fruit a capsule ellipsoid, 2-valved. Seeds compressed, winged; cotyledons broadly oblong, apex obtuse.

Worldwide: Two species in southern and tropical Africa.
