Description of the genus

Perennials. Inflorescence an open, contracted or spike-like panicle. Spikelets brown, occurring singly or in pairs, not in close triads. Lower lemma 3-nerved. Callus oblong to linear, truncate, 2-toothed or obliquely pungent. Upper lemma 2-dentate, glabrous or hairy, but without hair-tufts, with a deciduous awn from the sinus.

Worldwide: 26 species in tropical and South Africa, Madagascar and 1 in South America

Botswana: 2 taxa.
