Description of the genus

Spiny shrubs, densely branched, spreading. Leaves usually in fascicles, sessile to subsessile more or less fleshy, entire. Flowers solitary or in fascicles, usually on leafless branches. Perianth infundibuliform, 4 (5)lobed; lobes spreading. Fruit enclosed in hardened, elongated, longitudinally 4-winged perianth-tube. .

Worldwide: Two species in South Africa
