Location (short): Situated on the west bank of the Luangwa River, the park lies upstream from South Luangwa National park and is seperated from it by a Corridor.

Location (detailed): National Park No 2, gazetted 1972, area 4636 sq km. Situated in Mpika District. Formerly the Luangwa Valley Game Reserve North. Separated from South Luangwa NP by the Munyamadzi Corridor. In mid Luangwa River Valley, it is bounded by the Muchinga Escarpment in the west and the Luangwa in the east.

The elevation varies greatly and as result the park encompasses a very wide range of habitats. About three quarters of the park lies between 600-900m and is dominated by a mosaic of mopane and savanna woodland. Large stretches of the mopane have been significantly modified by elephants, partly in times when poaching pressure caused them to concentrate in safe areas. Along the main river are groves of Acacia albida, Trichilia emetica, Kigelia africana and Diospyros mespiliformis interspersed with pockets of riparian thicket. A way from the river, the park climbs the first gentle ridges of the Muchinga Escarpment and about a quarter of the park lies between 900-1200m. Here, the better-drained soils Support miombo and the streams are lined with riparian gallery forest.
