Notes: | Graminoid; Notes: Tufted perennial grass, up to 75 cm high when in flower. Culms erect to steeply ascending, branched sturdy and rigid, terete, covered over entire length by leaf bases. Leaf blade lanceolate, tapering over a length of 20 cm to a fine tip, up to 1 cm wide, expanded to somewhat revolute along margins, blue-green, glaucous, margins white, thickened with minute setulose indumentum, both surfaces with varying degree of long white downy indumentum, base rounded. Ligule a ridged fringe of dense, short, white indumentum not extending onto yellowish collar region. Leaf sheath 8 cm long, overlapping, loosely circumculmate, keeled but imbricate at base, canaliculate, densely pubescent, basally purple-tinted. Inflorescence a dense panicle narrowly elliptic, 180 x 30 mm, borne on slender peduncle subtended at base by upper leaf. Racemes adnate along main axis or ascending never spreading 6 cm long, alternate or clustered. Spikelets narrowly ellipsoid, apex sharply acute, 10 x 1 mm. Glumes membranous, dark green, glaucous, upper glume > lower glume. 6 flowers/spikelet. Lemma densely pubescent, apex deeply lacerate with 5 awns inserted between lobes; awns dark brown, straight to curved, rigid, glabrous. Palea ovate, membranous, about glabrous. Caryopsis ovoid, flattened on one side, smooth, shiny, glabrous, yellow-brown, 1,5 - 2 x 1 mm. |
