Description of the family

Annual, usually prostrate, tomentose herbs, rarely perennials or sub-shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate (spiral); margins pinnatifid or toothed. Petioles present; sometimes stipules. Inflorescence of solitary flowers, rarely a few aggregated. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic; hypanthium sometimes spiny. Sepals free. Petals free; white to pale orange or yellow. Ovary part-inferior to inferior; carpels fused. Fruit dry and indehiscent, spiny.

Worldwide: 3 genera and 10 species in South Africa and North Africa to India.

Botswana: 2 genera and 5 taxa.
