Description of the genus

Low-growing annual herbs with somewhat woody stems, diffusely to densely branched, woolly-tomentose. Leaves simple, in groups of 3 at each node, these groups alternate on the stem, their members unequal in size, with petioles connate at the very base; laminae crenate or serrate to pinnately lobed. Flowers solitary, axillary, showy; calyx-tube cyathiform, concrescent with the carpels in fruit, surrounded by 2–3 series of inconspicuous spinules, ebracteolate, calyx-lobes 5, narrowly oblong-acute; petals 5, large, with convolute aestivation, inserted at the mouth of the calyx-tube, spreading. Fruit dry, 10-locular, indehiscent. Seeds solitary in each locule.

Worldwide: Three species in South Africa.

Botswana: 2 taxa.
