Small shrub, usually not more than 2 m high. Young branchlets pubescent. Leaves mostly alternate along the branches, oblong-lanceolate to obovate, up to 7.5 × 2.5 cm, somewhat roughly hairy on both surfaces, becoming hairless with age. Flowers in short, dense axillary heads. Sepals greenish-yellow; petals absent; stamens c. 12, 3-4 mm long. Fruit round, c. 17 mm in diameter, densely brown-velvety.
Derivation of specific name: matabelensis: of Matabeleland in south-western Zimbabwe.
Habitat: Occurring in Mopane woodland.
